Welcome RHA® Fillers - and why Juvederm and Restylane should worry.

Updated: Apr 7, 2021

Have you ever wondered exactly what filler injections are made of, and how they work in the body? Most of the commonly-used fillers you already know and love are hyaluronic acid-based. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally-occurring molecule found throughout the body. It acts as a hydrator and humectant, capable of holding up to 1,000 times its molecular weight in water and drawing in moisture. This means that HA takes up space in the body - and therefore, by increasing HA levels in one part of the body (such as the lips), you increase the volume of that area. HA is a popular choice for filler formulations because it is a safe, innate substance that will not disrupt the body; it looks and feels natural; and it is reversible.

That being said, all fillers are not made equal - even if they all use the same base ingredient! For example, some fillers use HA molecules that are tightly cross-linked - this tends to make the filler longer-lasting. On the other hand, fillers with more loosely cross-linked HA molecules tend to be softer and give a more natural look. However, many patients do not want to have to choose between long-lasting durability and subtle but impactful results. This is where RHA® by Revance and Teoxane comes in.

RHA® stands for “Resilient Hyaluronic Acid”. It is a newly FDA-approved, innovative brand of filler created in collaboration by two companies: Teoxane, a Swiss laboratory, and Revance, a biotechnology company based in California. It is touted as the “First and Only FDA-Approved HA Filler for Dynamic Facial Wrinkles and Folds”.

The term “dynamic wrinkles and folds” refers to deep wrinkles and fine lines that develop as a result of repeated facial movement - for example, “smile lines” (nasolabial folds) which are amplified when we smile, talk, and laugh. RHA® fillers are specifically formulated to restore these areas, while maintaining its resilience (read: it will last longer, and is less likely to migrate into other areas) and natural appearance. RHA® fillers have been dominating the filler market in Europe, and are now offered exclusively at United States practices “who provide exceptional consumer experiences and outcomes.” This translates to talented, experienced, and high-end providers.

Our in-office physician injector, Dr. Sarah Yovino, is no exception! As one of the notable few Beverly Hills providers offering the exclusive RHA® filler collection, her specialty is helping patients achieve their cosmetic goals while minimizing discomfort and maintaining a natural look that is balanced with one’s individual facial features. As she always says, “the best injectable is not detectable!”
